Black Women Are Carrying More Stress Than We Admit

Black women are often praised for carrying everything. Health research gives us a reason to question whether 'strong' is being used as permission to leave somebody overloaded.

The weathering hypothesis describes the possibility that repeated exposure to social, economic and political stressors can accelerate physiological wear. A landmark national study found Black adults had higher allostatic-load scores than white adults across ages studied, with poor and nonpoor Black women showing the highest and second-highest probability of high scores.

Allostatic load is the body keeping receipts

Allostatic load is a research measure that combines biomarkers across multiple systems to study cumulative stress burden. It is not a diagnosis a person can make from a bad week.

A 2024 systematic review of studies involving Black adults found evidence linking perceived discrimination with allostatic load, while also noting differences across studies and the need for more research.

WEATHERING
THE NUMBER

Research uses this term to study cumulative physiological wear associated with repeated adversity.

Stress is not only personal time management

Chronic caregiving, work pressure, financial strain, discrimination, neighborhood conditions and health-care experiences can layer together. Telling an overloaded person to meditate harder misses the structural part of the story.

Personal tools can still matter - sleep, boundaries, movement, social support, mentalhealth care and medical follow-up - but they work inside a larger environment.

Strength should include support

If stress is affecting sleep, mood, blood pressure, functioning or a sense of safety, it deserves more than being laughed off as 'just life.' A clinician or mental-health professional can help assess what is happening and what support fits.

This is general wellness information, not individual medical advice. The cultural shift is simpler: stop treating Black women's endurance as evidence that the load is acceptable.

Stress deserves a full picture
  • Work and caregiving
  • Financial pressure
  • Discrimination
  • Sleep, mental health and physical symptoms
Strong should never mean unsupported.
