What AI Means for Black Workers, Creators and Entrepreneurs

AI is not coming. It is already sitting inside sales teams, strategy meetings, writing workflows, customer service systems and creative tools.

A 2026 U.S. Census Bureau working paper found that 18% of firms used AI in at least one business function during November 2025-January 2026; the share rose to 32% when weighted by employment. Most AI-using firms reported augmentation rather than job cuts.

Do not oversell the layoffs - or the safety

The Census study found 66% of AI users relied on it solely to augment tasks, while AI-related employment decreases were reported by only 2% of firms. That is a snapshot during early adoption, not a guarantee about long-term labor effects.

Brookings estimates that more than 30% of U.S. workers could see at least half of their occupation's tasks disrupted by generative AI. It also stresses that much more analysis is needed on distributional effects by race.

For Black workers: build leverage, not panic

The practical move is to learn how AI changes the specific tasks in your job, not to memorize a list of doomed occupations. Workers who can verify outputs, protect sensitive data, use domain knowledge and redesign workflows may have more leverage than people who treat the tool as magic.

If employers deploy AI, workers also need a voice in accuracy standards, surveillance rules, evaluation and how productivity gains are shared.

For creators and entrepreneurs: speed is not ownership

AI can lower the cost of research, ideation, customer support, editing and operations. It can also create risks around confidential information, inaccurate outputs, rights clearance and generic content that erodes the very cultural specificity an audience came for.

Use AI to remove friction. Keep human judgment on brand voice, factual verification, contracts, strategy and cultural nuance.

AI operating rules
  • Verify important outputs
  • Do not feed confidential data into tools casually
  • Keep human review on public content
  • Own the audience and source files
The useful question is not whether AI is good or bad. It is who knows how to use it, govern it and own what gets built with it.
