Oktoberfest: Munich Is Calling

Munich's Oktoberfest is part folk festival, part temporary city and part global ritual - sixteen days of tents, music, food, rides and millions of visitors.

BLACK CNTRD WORLD / EVENTS

The 2026 festival runs September 19 through October 4 on the Theresienwiese. Admission to the main festival grounds and marquees is free; the historic Oide Wiesn has a separate admission charge.

It started with a wedding

Oktoberfest traces its origins to the 1810 wedding celebration of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese. Public festivities on fields outside Munich became a recurring event and eventually the world's largest folk festival.

The modern Wiesn includes 17 large festival tents and 21 smaller ones, each with its own atmosphere, food and music.

Know the rhythm before you go

Weekdays tend to be easier for walk-ins than evenings and weekends. Munich's transit system makes the grounds accessible without a car, and official visitor rules cover bag size, opening hours, family days and accessibility.

Oide Wiesn offers a more traditional version of the festival with historic rides, Bavarian music, a museum tent and a €4 admission for most visitors age 15 and older.

Black travelers do not need an invitation to joy

Black travelers already move through the world's festivals, cities and traditions. Showing up in a dirndl, lederhosen or whatever feels right is not a claim to own Bavarian culture; it is participation in a public celebration designed to receive visitors.

Travel is one of the ways Black life expands its map. Munich belongs on that map too.
